Norris Closes to Within Five Points as Antonelli Wins Again in Madrid

The first Formula 1 Grand Prix at Madring may not have produced quite the overtaking spectacle that some had hoped for, but for the Snus Vikings Nicotine Pouch Formula 1 Championship, the Spanish Grand Prix could prove to be one of the most significant races of the season.

Kimi Antonelli continued his remarkable 2026 campaign by taking victory ahead of Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, although for much of the afternoon it looked as though Norris was heading towards his third victory in four races. Instead, an unfortunately timed Virtual Safety Car and slow McLaren pit stop turned the race on its head, handing Antonelli the opportunity he needed while Norris eventually recovered to third.

Behind them, Charles Leclerc salvaged fourth place for Ferrari after an unusual strategy briefly put him into the lead, Oscar Piastri recovered from early damage to finish eighth, Valtteri Bottas came home 18th and Lewis Hamilton suffered his first retirement of the season with a brake problem.

For Ferrari and ZYN, the consequence is clear: Hamilton's once substantial Nicotine Pouch Championship lead has almost disappeared.

Norris Looked Set for Victory

Norris started the inaugural Madring Grand Prix from pole position and immediately came under pressure from Antonelli, who twice ran beyond the circuit while attempting to challenge the McLaren.

After the early exchanges settled down, Norris began to demonstrate exactly why McLaren had been optimistic about Madrid. He opened a gap of more than three seconds and continued stretching his advantage, looking increasingly comfortable at the front as his tyres performed well on the new surface. By lap nine he was five seconds clear, and that advantage had grown further by the time the race changed completely on lap 14.

Lance Stroll stopped at Turn 20 with a brake problem, triggering a Virtual Safety Car at almost the worst possible moment for Norris, who had already passed the pit entrance and therefore couldn't take advantage of the reduced-speed period but Antonelli, Verstappen and George Russell could.

When Norris eventually stopped after racing resumed, the situation became even worse as a slow seven-second tyre change dropped him behind Antonelli, Verstappen, Russell and Leclerc. What had looked like a relatively controlled victory had suddenly become a recovery drive.

Norris' assessment afterwards was rather concise: "We were too quick, that's all."

Antonelli Takes His Eighth Victory

Antonelli still had work to do because Leclerc, who hadn't stopped during the Virtual Safety Car, remained at the front as Ferrari gambled on another Safety Car or red flag creating an opportunity later in the race but it just never arrived.

Leclerc stayed out until lap 48 before finally stopping, which released Antonelli into the effective lead with Verstappen and Norris behind him. Norris spent the closing stages trying to find a way past the Red Bull and came close when Verstappen ran wide at Turn 5, but couldn't complete the move and crossed the line just 0.738 seconds behind him.

Antonelli therefore became the first Formula 1 winner at Madring, finishing 4.351 seconds ahead of Verstappen and 5.089 seconds ahead of Norris, with Leclerc and Russell completing the top five. It was Antonelli's eighth Grand Prix victory of 2026, extending his lead in the actual Formula 1 Drivers' Championship to 81 points.

After winning from 19th on the grid at Monza only a week earlier, Antonelli has now completed the European double-header with consecutive victories.

Hamilton's First Retirement Changes Everything

While Norris was recovering towards the podium, Hamilton's race was over almost before it had begun.

The Ferrari driver had started fourth but encountered brake trouble and retired after only six laps, recording his first DNF of the 2026 season.

In the real Formula 1 championship it was another setback in Antonelli's increasingly dominant season, but in our Nicotine Pouch Championship it had much bigger consequences.

Hamilton arrived in Madrid on 191 points, 20 ahead of Norris. With Hamilton scoring nothing and Norris collecting 15 points for third, that advantage has been slashed to just five points.

The Drivers' Championship now stands:

Before Hungary, Norris was 56 points behind Hamilton. Four Grands Prix later, 55 of those points have disappeared.

The Nicotine Pouch Championship is now effectively separated by one finishing position.

Leclerc Keeps Ferrari Moving Forward

Hamilton's retirement could have made Madrid considerably worse for Ferrari, but Leclerc's fourth place provided an important 12 points for ZYN.

Ferrari's decision to leave him out during the Virtual Safety Car put Leclerc into the lead for much of the middle portion of the Grand Prix, although the strategy depended on another interruption that never materialised. He eventually stopped at the end of lap 48 and returned to finish fourth, 29.116 seconds behind Antonelli.

Those points also keep Leclerc firmly involved in our Drivers' Championship. He moves from 155 to 167 points, putting him only 19 behind Norris and 24 behind Hamilton.

What appeared several races ago to be Hamilton's championship to lose has therefore developed into a genuine three-driver contest between the two Ferrari/ZYN drivers and Norris for McLaren/VELO.

Piastri Limits the Damage After Early Trouble

Oscar Piastri had a much more difficult afternoon in the second McLaren, suffering front-wing damage during the opening stages after contact in a congested start and dropping into a battle further down the order.

He eventually recovered to eighth, earning another four points and moving his Nicotine Pouch Championship total from 116 to 120.

It wasn't the result McLaren would have wanted from their second car, particularly with Hamilton retiring, but Norris' podium means VELO have still reduced Ferrari's Teams' Championship advantage for the fourth consecutive Grand Prix.

The updated Teams' Championship is:

Ferrari's advantage is now 52 points, down from 90 after Belgium, while the more immediate concern for ZYN will be that Norris has moved considerably closer to taking the Drivers' Championship lead.

Still No Points for Bottas and 77

The new circuit didn't provide the breakthrough Cadillac and 77 were hoping for.

Sergio Perez retired after 31 laps, while Bottas finished 18th and three laps behind the winner, meaning he remains on zero points in our championship.

The increasingly familiar question of when, or whether, Bottas can finally put 77 onto the scoreboard therefore survives for another Grand Prix.

From 56 Points to Five

The headline from Madrid isn't simply another Antonelli victory, impressive though his consecutive wins at Monza and Madring have been.

For the Nicotine Pouch Formula 1 Championship, it is what has happened behind him.

Hamilton led Norris by 56 points before Hungary, but Norris won in Budapest, won again at Zandvoort, finished ahead of Hamilton at Monza and has now taken another 15 points out of him in Madrid which leaves the gap at just five points.

Leclerc is only 24 points from the championship lead, while Ferrari and ZYN's advantage over McLaren and VELO has fallen to 52 points, so a championship that appeared to be firmly under Ferrari's control in July now looks completely different in September.

Madrid didn't produce the result Norris deserved after dominating the opening stages, but third place may ultimately prove extremely valuable.

For the first time this season, Lando Norris and VELO can head to the next Grand Prix knowing that the Nicotine Pouch Drivers' Championship lead is within touching distance.
